A 140-Year-Old Synagogue Enters the Age of Web 2.0

Like the congregation it represents, the Chizuk Amuno website does a dozen jobs at once. Most importantly, it attracts new members as it strengthens ties to current ones.

Our research and discovery phase settled on a clear direction – Chizuk Amuno is a sacred community with emphasis on celebration, participation, and exploration. The site had to be warm and interactive, with an aesthetic and tone fitting for the sacred.

The first encounter the user has is with the site’s feature area – a rotating montage of photos that members load and caption themselves. Other frequently refreshed elements include blogs not only by the clergy and key staff, but by the members themselves. A “prayer wall” invites members to share blessings with one another and the wider world.

One of the most important challenges was to create a calendaring function that is easily sortable, conveys multiple tracks of information, and yet lets major, featured events rise to the top. Different iterations of the calendar appear as sidebar content on many pages throughout the site.

The entire site is built on the BigTree CMS, a flexible platform that can power sites of all sizes. Developed by Fastspot, BigTree empowers teams of non-programmers to keep their information up-to-date and engage with their audiences. That’s exactly what Chizuk Amuno needed.
